Molly Spotted Elk

Molly Spotted Elk (1903 - 1977) was the stage name of Molly Dellis Nelson Archambaud, dancer, film actress, writer and member of the Penobscot Nation. Born at Indian Island, Old Town, Maine, Molly was the first of eight children born to the Tribal Governor and his no-nonsense, craftsperson wife. Beginning in her teens, Molly entered the vaudeville circuit during summer breaks from school. In short order she became a celebrated dancer and model, and gained a staring role in "The Silent Enemy" (1930), an award winning documentary film about Native Canadian Ojibwas. In the following year she went to work as a dancer at the Colonial Exposition in Paris where she met and later married journalist Jean Archambaud. At the outset of World War II, she and her daughter escaped from France and returned to Maine. Her remarkable story is contained in Bunny McBride's Molly Spotted Elk: A Penobscot in Paris (University of Oklahoma Press, 1995).
