Madame Nordica

Farmington, Maine's Lillian Norton (1859 - 1914) had one of the most remarkable voices of her day. She studied at the New England Conservatory of Music, toured the country, and in 1879 as Madame Nordica, made her Italian debut in Mozart's "Don Giovanni." After achieving international stardom in the competitive European opera scene, she became a regular performer at the Metropolitan Opera in New York from 1893-1907. In 21 roles and over 200 performances at the Met, she continued to win acclaim. Other celebrated downeast divas included Annie Louise Cary (1841 - 1921) of Wayne; Emma Eames (1867 - 1952) of Bath; and Minnie Plummer Stevens (1869 - 1944) of Paris, Maine. The Nordica Homestead and Museum in Farmington have objects relating to the great soprano's life, including early recordings.
