"The Battle of the Bridge": Supported by their union, the United Shoe Workers of America, hundreds of shoe workers in Lewiston and Auburn took to the streets for better wages and better conditions. A march across the Androscoggin River from Lewiston to Auburn became a violent squabble between police and shoe workers. Workers threw stones; policemen sprayed tear gas. The National Guard was brought in. Strike leaders were jailed and the shoe workers failed to get their demands met.
