Bath's Old South Meeting House is burned: As more immigrants arrived in the U.S., the nativist movement grew stronger. A nativist political party known as the Know Nothing Party formed in the mid-1800s, and began an anti-immigrant, anti-Catholic campaign. In Maine, Know Nothing party members directed their hatred toward Irish immigrants. Catholic services had been held in Bath's Old South Meeting House until a mob of nativist rioters set fire to the church. Similar violent incidents happened in other parts of the state.
