"Red Paint" burial sites: One of Maine's most famous archaeological treasures are the burial sites of the so-called Red Paint People. These sites are characterized by carefully crafted stone artifacts, some in the shape of marine animals, and a conspicuous dusting of red ochre. These were ancient cemeteries, where the dead were buried with ceremonial artifacts and were ritually dusted with powdered hematite. By 3800 BP, the Red Paint People seem to vanish from the archaeological record.
