Season 2: Hometown Economies

Hometown Economies: Myths & Realities (Duration 57 Minutes)

What's really going on with the Maine economy? The final program in the "Hometown Economies" series looks at several families that embody the "changing Maine" - in Millinocket, Standish and Rockland. We'll also hear from some experts who tackle common misconceptions and possible futures for our state.

Lumbering, fishing, farming and shipbuilding—these are examples of the industries that built Maine’s communities and connected the state through trade and commerce with the nation and beyond. Over time, changing conditions such as available natural resources, methods of production, modes of transportation and the availability of cheaper labor in other countries have resulted in the decline of these mainstays of local economies. Today, Maine communities are striving to reinvent their economic bases for the 21st century amid an ever-shifting economic landscape.

"Hometown Economies" host Ann Murray. This original MPBN series returns for a second season beginning Thursday, September 20, 2007.
