A proposed deal to sell Verizon’s local phone and Internet lines in Maine and the rest of northern New England to a much smaller company, FairPoint, took a hard hit when staff at the Maine Public Utilities Commission recommended that the proposed sale be rejected. It questions FairPoint’s financial wherewithal and it blames Verizon for letting Maine’s phone network deteriorate.
