Maine Watch with Jennifer Rooks for April 11 , 2008
A Closer Look at the Real ID Act
Last week the governor pledged to change Maine's driver's licenses so that they will comply with new Department of Homeland Security standards. In response, DHS granted the state a last-minute extension so that Maine residents can still board airplanes and enter Federal Buildings. This week, the Governor's bill goes before the legislature, and it is facing strong opposition. Some say it compromises civil liberties, others say it's simply too expensive and unworkable.
Guests for Real ID include:
Matt Dunlap/Secretary of State
Shenna Bellows/MCLU
Anne Jordan/Commissioner of Public Safety
Also, go inside the Lewiston/Auburn Youth Court, Maine's only court by and for teenagers. The concept appears to be working well. The recidivism rate among young people who've come before the court is a fraction of that for the system at large.
Guests for L/A Youth Court:
Paul Cote/District Court Judge
Dick Kendall/Youth Court Founder
