A Conversation with Chief Kirk Francis of the Penobscot Nation

This week on Maine Watch, the Penobscot Nation is moving towards severing government ties with the state of Maine and challenging the Indian Land Claims Settlement Act. Its leaders say this is about more than just gaming. We'll talk with Chief Kirk Francis about the reason behind the Penobscot's decision and what happens now.

Underage Drinking in Maine

Also, Maine's underage drinking rate is higher than the national average. The state and local communities have ramped up efforts to combat the problem. We'll look at what's being done.

The Maine Office of Substance Abuse launched a campaign to help parents fight underage drinking. They produced seven public service announcements.

Teens in Lewiston created a youth-to-youth outreach program called "U Booze U Looze." They produced an underage drinking awareness film in 2007 titled "Smashed." The film has garnered critical reviews for its realistic portrayal of the aftermath of a drunk driving accident in which a teen was behind the wheel after drinking heavily on prom night.
