On Monday, April 30 beginning at 11:00 am, the Maine Public Broadcasting Network brings you another live performance from our studio in Bangor, this time featuring the young winners of the 2007 Bangor Symphony Orchestra High School Concerto Competition, which took place February 24.
The first-place winner of the $500 Annas-Cupp Award is violinist Heather Thomas of Belgrade. Thomas is a home schooled junior. She currently studies under the tutelage of Fudeko Takahashi of Lexington, MA. Thomas will perform solo with the Bangor Symphony Orchestra in 2008.
Second-place winner is pianist Marlene McCarthy of Farmingdale. McCarthy is a junior attending Hall-Dale High School. She currently studies under the tutelage of Chiharu Naruse of Hallowell.
Third-place winner is pianist Rachael Townsend of Jefferson. Townsend is a freshman attending Coastal Christian High School. She currently studies under the tutelage of Chiharu Naruse of Hallowell.
The Bangor Symphony Orchestra Maine High School Concerto Competition was established in 1982 as a vehicle to recognize and encourage outstanding young Maine musicians. Enrollment is open to any Maine high school student who plays an orchestral instrument.
For many past winners, the BSO Maine High School Concerto Competition was the first step in a long, exciting musical career. Winners of the Concerto Competition have gone on to receive Grammy Awards; perform for popular Hollywood movies; study at notable conservatories and schools, including Juilliard; perform on NPR’s From the Top series; teach in Paris, France; and perform and tour around the world.
Last year's winner, Lydia Kilian of Weeks Mills, will be performing Sunday, May 13 with the Bangor Symphony Orchestra. More information on that performance can be found here.
