Heavy Turnout At Hearing on Welfare Cuts

Maine lawmakers came face-to-face Wednesday with those who will be affected by slightly more than $27 million dollars in reductions to state health and welfare programs as hundreds of people poured into the State House to protest the cuts. The decreases have been orderd by Gov. John Baldacci who is trying to close a $190 million dollar gap in the state budget without raising taxes or depleting state reserves. As A.J. Higgins reports, the crowd on hand for a public hearing on the cuts before the Appropriations Committee was standing room only.
