New Book Examines Future Without Carbon

Despite recent enthusiasm for alternative sources of energy, such as windpower, ethanol and biodiesel, the world economy remains overwhelmingly dependent on fossil fuel, and it's a situation which cannot continue. That's the view of U-Maine Law professor Don Zillman, co-author of "Beyond the Carbon Economy: Energy Law in Transition", published this year. Zillman says humankind must search beyond fossil fuels to combat global warming, quell political instability in much of the world, and meet the growing demand from rapidly developing nations like India and China. And he says there's one other factor that is often overlooked when discussing the global energy situation: poverty.  Tom Porter has this story.
