Jazz with Rich Tozier

Friday Nights at 9:00 pm
Only On The Radio Stations of MPBN

 

Jazz and Friday nights have long been synonymous on the radio stations of MPBN, and serving as the anchor for the evening is the Friday Night Jazz with Rich Tozier program.  Music from the legends, the up-and-comers and even the occasional live in-studio performance are all featured for two hours every Friday beginning at 9:00 pm.

Friday, May 9: The Horace Silver Quintet will be heard in top form in a 1958 Newport Jazz Festival performance, recently issued for the first time on a new CD from Blue Note (pictured right).  The group that night fifty years ago consisted of Horace Silver on piano, Louis Smith on trumpet; Junior Cook on tenor sax; Gene Taylor on bass and Louis Hayes on drums.

 

The Horace Silver Quintet will be heard in top form in a 1958 Newport Jazz Festival performance on the Friday, May 9 edition of "Friday Night Jazz" with host Rich Tozier on the radio stations of MPBN.

 

Amina Figarova's richly-textured "September Suite," released in 2005, will be featured on the Friday, May 16 edition of "Friday Night Jazz" with host Rich Tozier on the radio stations of MPBN.

 

Friday, May 16: Amina Figarova's richly-textured "September Suite," released in 2005, will be featured. Figarova, pictured left, is a native of Azerbaijan who now makes her home in the Netherlands. Friday, May 23: Recent releases by vocalists, including Melody Gardot, will be sampled tonight.  A native of Philadelphia, the 24-year-old Gardot recorded her first album from her bedside while recouperating from an accident in which she was hit by a car and that now requires her to wear the dark glasses she is pictured in at right.

The High Fidelity Jazz Combo, this year's edition of George Stevens Academy's award-winning music makers, will be guests in the Bangor Studio for a live concert from MPBN's Bangor studios on the Friday, May 30 edition of "Friday Night Jazz" with host Rich Tozier.

Friday, June 6: A classic recording of the Dave Brubeck Quartet with singer Jimmy Rushing (pictured right) will be featured tonight. Originally released in 1960, this classic has since been remastered on CD for the digital age. We'll also hear some of Rushing's other work, including some memorable material with Count Basie.

The Ameranouche Quintet will perform in a live broadcast from the Bangor studio on the Friday, June 13 edition of "Friday Night Jazz" with host Rich Tozier on the radio stations of MPBN.

 

Friday, June 13: The Ameranouche Quintet will be tonight's guest in a live broadcast from the Bangor studio, where they will play their Django-inspired "gypsy jazz," or what they refer to as "hot acoustic swing." Friday, June 20: The Novel Jazz Septet will be playing its brand of straightahead jazz in a live broadcast from the Bangor studio. The group, based in Newcastle, Maine, consists of Barney Balch (trombone), Mike Mitchell (trumpet), Bruce Boege (Saxophone), Dave Clark (guitar), Herb Maine (bass), Mark Macksoud (drums), and Mickey Felder (piano). Friday, June 27: Trombonist Bob Brookmeyer's historic recordings for World Pacific from the late '50's (and since reissued on Mosaic) will be generously sampled tonight. Now 78, Brookmeyer currently teaches jazz composition at Boston's New England Conservatory of Music.

Due to national copyright agreements, audio on-demand and the corresponding playlist for the following programs cannot be posted at the same time. Playlists are available after the program audio on-demand has been removed from the list below.
