Anadama bread is a cornmeal and molasses based bread. There are
several stories of its origin, the most popular being that a Maine
farmer had a lazy wife named Anna who continually served him
cornmeal mush and molasses. One day, the disgusted farmer grabbed
the bowl of mush, added some flour and yeast and created a bread,
all the while muttering under this breath, "Anna, damn
her." Anadama bread is available in specialty food stores and
small bakeries throughout Maine.
