Technical Operator

The Technical Operator performs skilled work in the areas of operation, monitoring and control of all television and radio equipment.

The Technical Operator must perform assignments independently, and at all times is expected to maintain composure under stress while making decisions affecting the operations of MPBN, with a meticulous attention to detail and record-keeping. The Technical Operator’s work schedule may be changed temporarily or permanently as necessary.

  • Operates and monitors television and radio studio equipment.
  • Operates and monitors television and radio transmitters.
  • Maintains database records for tracking transmission, master control and radio discrepancies.
  • Ensures television programming has closed captioning, descriptive video and audio from NOAA.
  • Reviews all electronic and paper logs for accuracy.
  • Ingests and reviews daily record sheet orders into the server.
  • Sends program audio to MPBN radio as needed.
  • Dubs data to various media.
  • Operates electronic test equipment needed to ensure compliance with technical standards set forth by the FCC and the Technology Department.
  • Maintains accurate broadcast, transmitter and maintenance logs and records.
  • Works with staff in other departments to ensure that all operational needs for those departments are met.
  • Works directly with all technology personnel in identifying and correcting all technical problems.
  • Refers all equipment problems and repair needs to the supervisor responsible and may make adjustments or repairs necessary under the supervision of that supervisor.
  • Refers all programming problems to a designated person of the responsible department for direction in resolving the problem; may have to select and broadcast alternative programming in an emergency.
  • May be assigned to a specific area of operations.
  • May be asked to perform editing using Final Cut Pro or Adobe Premiere.
  • Responsible for cleaning off satellite dishes and other external equipment in inclement weather.
  • Other reasonably-related duties as assigned.


  • One-year of experience in broadcast technology or related field preferred.
  • Must have effective communication and computer skills.
  • Ability to perform physical tasks which may include lifting, bending and working outside in inclement weather required.

This position is located at MPBN’s facility in Bangor, Maine.
