Maine Girl's Competency Hearing Postponed
02/28/2013 7:42 AM ET

The hearing in Skowhegan District Court scheduled for today was delayed until March 15 at the request of the Fairfield girl's lawyer.

SKOWHEGAN, Maine (AP) _ A competency hearing for an 11-year-old Maine girl charged with manslaughter in the death of an infant has been postponed because of the weather.

The Morning Sentinel reports the hearing in Skowhegan District Court scheduled for Thursday was delayed until March 15 at the request of the Fairfield girl's lawyer, who told a judge the defendant would have to travel a "great distance'' during a snowstorm. The region is expected to get six to 10 inches of snow Thursday.

The girl was charged at age 10 with juvenile manslaughter in the death in July of a 3-month-old girl. The older girl's mother was taking care of the baby.

The hearing is meant to determine whether the girl understands the legal system and can aid her own defense.
