Maine to Allow Health Plans to be Extended 1 Year
11/26/2013 04:07 PM ET

Maine's Bureau of Insurance said today that Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield will be allowed to renew such health plans for another year.

AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) _ Maine's insurance regulators say they will allow the one-year extension of existing health insurance plans proposed by President Barack Obama.

Facing political pressure, Obama said earlier this month that insurers could extend plans that don't comply with the Affordable Care Act provisions for another year.

Maine's Bureau of Insurance said on Tuesday that Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield will be allowed to renew such health plans for another year.

About 8,500 Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield of Maine policyholders have been told that their current plans are being cancelled and replaced with a different plan that complies with the health law.

Maine joins states like Illinois and Michigan that have agreed to allow the one year extension while others, like California, will not.
