Battlefield Cross MonumentIt takes nearly seven minutes to read all of the names of Maine's casualties of the War on Terror over the last 12 years.

On this Memorial Day weekend they were recognized with a solemn ceremony at the State House that featured an explanation about the origins of The Battlefield Cross memorial installed in the Hall of Flags. The cross memorial depicts a rifle standing in a pair of soldier's boots with a helmet at the top and dog tags draped on the rifle. Brigadier General James Campbell said the symbol has become a customary way for soldiers to honor their fallen comrades but it's a tradition that dates back to the Civil War when it took a long time to recover the dead. Four Identification Tags bearing the names of servicemen and women with ties to Maine who died during overseas over the last two years were added to the Battlefield Cross Memorial, bringing the total number to 54 names. They are: Private First Class Tyler Springmann of Hartland, Captain John Brainard III of Dover-Foxcroft, Staff Sergeant Jessica Wing of Glenburn and Sergeant First Class Aaron Henderson of Houlton. Tina Martin is Tyler Springmann's mother. She and her family said today's ceremony means a lot.

Private First Class Tyler Springmann, from Hartland, was killed in Afghanistan in July of 2011. He was 19 years old. To honor Springmann and other soldiers' families' sacrifice and to acknowledge their loss, Governor LePage has declared Monday, May 27, 2013 as Gold Star Family Day.Tyler Springmann's Family
