Police Chief Eric Nason said a staff member found the loaded .380 caliber, semi-automatic handgun in a bag the boy brought to Rollins Family Child Care Center on April 23.

HALLOWELL, Maine (AP) _ Authorities in Maine are investigating after a 4-year-old boy brought a loaded handgun to his Hallowell preschool.

The district attorney's office has asked for more information to determine whether to bring charges.

Police Chief Eric Nason said a staff member found the loaded .380 caliber, semi-automatic handgun in a bag the boy brought to Rollins Family Child Care Center on April 23. Nason said the gun's safety was on but a round was in the chamber.

He tells the Kennebec Journal the gun was in a bag the boy uses to carry belongings between the homes of his divorced parents.

Nason says the gun was legally owned by the boy's father, who reported that he had last seen it in the door pocket of his pickup truck on April 18.
