08/27/2013 01:58 PM ET

Fairpoint will leverage just over $1 million in funding from the Federal Communications Commission's Connect America Fund to expand broadband coverage to 44 Maine towns.

Fairpoint Communications announced today it is expanding its broadband coverage to 44 under-served towns across Maine. Towns such as Caribou, Winterport, Old Town and Topsham will see improved, or new, coverage.

Fairpoint will leverage just over $1 million in funding from the Federal Communications Commission's Connect America Fund.

The project will span three years, with roughly a third of the 44 communites seeing increased coverage each year.

Earlier this month, Fairpoint reached an agreement with the Maine Public Utilities Commission to expand its broadband coverage to 87 percent of customers by April of next year.
