A driver being pursued by police has been killed after crashing a vehicle into woods in Molunkus.

The Penobscot County Sheriff's Office says a deputy sheriff spotted the car speeding on Main Street in Mattawamkeag at about 8:40 p.m on Monday, and pursued the vehicle. Officials say the vehicle was going 75 mph in a 25 mph zone.

After traveling north on Route 2, the driver crossed into Aroostook County, and Deputy Sheriff Michael Knights lost sight of the vehicle, officials say.

While heading back toward Route 2, Knights saw the vehicle rolled over in the woods and discovered the driver dead.

The name, age, gender and hometown of the driver - the vehicle's lone occupant - have not yet been released.
