Report: Maine Making it Tough for Minors to Buy Tobacco Products
08/27/2013 04:38 PM ET

A report by the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration indicates that Maine is at the top when it comes to preventing underage tobacco sales.

Maine ranks at the top among states for preventing underage tobacco sales, according to a report released by the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.

Susan Marsiglia Gray coordinates the agency's efforts to decrease youth access to tobacco. "Maine's rate of tobacco sales to youth is just under 2 percent, which is significantly lower than the national average rate of 9.1 percent, in 2012," she says.

Gray says Maine's success is due to the state's strong laws, enforcement, and educational programs, such as the No Butts campaign.
