Birthday of Social Security - and Architect's Ties to Maine - Observed
08/13/2013   Reported By: Keith Shortall

Tomorrow, the "child" of Frances Perkins will celebrate a 78th birthday. Perkins, who had ties to Maine, served as secretary of labor under Franklin D. Roosevelt. Her "child," in this context, is the Social Security system, which Roosevelt signed into law in 1935. Keith Shortall spoke with Dr. Christopher Breiseth, who chairs the board of directors of the Frances Perkins Center in Newcastle, about the safety net Perkins helped create.
