Environmental Group to Endorse for Maine Governor

The Sierra Club isn't saying who's getting the nod ahead of a Monday news conference but there's one candidate who's already been stricken from the list: Gov. Paul LePage.

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) _ A leading environmental group is ready to make an early endorsement in Maine's gubernatorial race.

The Sierra Club isn't saying who's getting the nod ahead of a Monday news conference but there's one candidate who's already been stricken from the list: Gov. Paul LePage.

Spokesman Glen Brand says the environmental group is devoting all of its resources to replacing LePage with ``a pro-environment governor.'' That leaves either Democrat Mike Michaud or independent Eliot Cutler.

The race is shaping up much more quickly than four years ago, when there were a dozen major party candidates vying to runs. This time, the field was set more than a year before the election.
